ขอต้อนรับเข้าสู่ สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคไทย

     นางยูนิส  ไชรเวอร์ ผู้ก่อตั้งองค์กรสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคสากล เป็นผู้นำในการต่อสู้เพื่อพัฒนาคุณค่า และคุณภาพชีวิตของผู้พิการทางสมองปัญญาทั่วโลก

     ในปี พ.ศ. 2500 นางยูนิสเข้ามารับผิดชอบมิลนิธิโจเซฟ พี เคนนาดี้ จูเนียร์ ซึ่งมีวัตถุประสงค์ในการดำเนินงาน 2 ประการคือ (1) เพื่อค้นคว้าหาสาเหตุของความพิการด้านการเรียนรู้ เพื่อหาแนวทางในการป้องกันการเกิดความพิการ และ (2) เพื่อพัฒนาโอกาสของบุคคลพิการทางสมองและปัญญาในการใช้ชีวิตในสังคมหรือชุมชนของตนเอง

หนึ่งในโครงการของมูลนิธินี้ ที่ส่งเสริมคุณค่าของผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญา คือ สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคซึ่งก่อตั้งเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2511

ทุกวันนี้ นักกีฬาสเปเชียลโอลิมปิค “หรือนักกีฬาพิเศษ” 2.25 ล้านคน จาก 160 ประเทศทั่วโลก เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมในโครงการสเปเชียลโอลิมปิค

นางยูนิส เสียชีวิตเมื่อวันที่ 11 สิงหาคม 2552

    สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคเป็นองค์กรระหว่างประเทศที่พัฒนาคุณภาพชีวิตของผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญา ด้วยการส่งเสริมความเข้าใจ กับการยอมรับในสังคมระหว่างคนปกติกับผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญา โดยเปิดโอกาสให้บุคคลผู้พิการทางสติปัญญาทุกเพศ ทุกวัย ได้ฝึกทักษะทางด้านการกีฬา และสามารถเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันรวมทั้งกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ที่พัฒนาสุขภาพ อารมณ์ สังคมของสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคตลอดทั้งปี ปัจจุบันมีนักกีฬาพิเศษเข้าโครงการ 3 ล้านคน จาก 180ประเทศทั่วโลก สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคเป็นแบบอย่างในชุมชนที่ยกย่องความสามารถส่วนบุคคลที่หลากหลายของผู้พิการ

     สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 1968 โดย นางยูนีส เคนเนดี้ ไชร์เวอร์ เพื่อให้บริการอย่างต่อเนื่องให้กับผู้ที่พิการทางสมองและปัญญา ในการพัฒนาทักษะความสามารถ และสุขภาพร่างกาย ตลอดจนส่งเสริมความกล้าแสดงออก ที่สร้างเสริมประสบการณ์อันสนุกสนาน และมิตรภาพใหม่

    สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคเป็นโครงการระดับโลกที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะ ที่ให้ผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญาตระหนักถึงศักยภาพ และ ความสามารถในการพัฒนาตนเอง โดยใช้กีฬาเป็นสื่อ ซึ่งมีอิทธิพลต่อชีวิตของผู้คนรอบข้างทุกคนที่มีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมดังกล่าว

     สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคไทยดำเนินการเกี่ยวกับการพัฒนาเรื่อง สุขภาพ และทักษะการเรียนรู้ต่าง ๆ ทุกวันนี้ในประเทศไทยมีผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญามากกว่า 15,000คน โดยครอบคลุมเกือบทุกจังหวัดในประเทศไทย และเปิดโอกาสให้มีการเล่นกีฬาที่หลากหลาย อาทิ กรีฑา ฟุตบอล บาสเกตบอล บอชชี่ เทเบิลเทนนิส ว่ายน้ำ เทนนิส แบดมินตัน และการฝึกทักษะกลไกให้กับผู้ที่พิการมาก

     ในการเข้าร่วมโครงการสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคนั้น นักกีฬาไม่ต้องเสียค่าใช้จ่ายใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น กิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ของสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคไทย ดำเนินการโดยใช้อาสาสมัครเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมเช่นเดียวกับสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคทั่วโลก จากโรงเรียน มหาวิทยาลัย พนักงานบริษัท และสมาชิกครอบครัว โดยกิจกรรมทั้งหมดได้รับการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐ เอกชน และผู้บริจาครายบุคคล

     ผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญาในประเทศไทยนั้นมีประมาณ 2 ล้านคน หรือ 3% ของประชากรซึ่งจำนวนของผู้ที่เข้าโครงการสเปเชียลโอลิมปิคเป็นเศษส่วนที่น้อยมากเมื่อเทียบกับประชากรผู้พิการทางสมองและปัญญาของประเทศ ยังมีอีกหลายอย่างที่เรายังต้องทำ สเปเชียลโอลิมปิคไทยขอเรียนเชิญทุกท่านที่สนใจเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมของเรา ในการเป็นอาสาสมัคร ผู้ปกครอง หรือ ผู้ให้การสนับสนุนโครงการ

Tribute to Mrs.Eunice Kennedy Shriver

Mrs. Shriver will be remembered as an extraordinary person who inspired many others to make a difference through actions, not just words. Her belief in the power of the human spirit has transformed the lives of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and their communities in every part of the world.

Special Olympics was introduced to Thailand in 1987 and today, our athletes benefit from their participation in the Special Olympics Programme as well as contributing to the development of its future by sharing with us their views and recommendations. Today, their opinions are heard and valued. Mrs. Shriver has made all of us a better person.

Special Olympics Thailand – its Board of Directors, coaches, volunteers, sports officials, families, and most importantly, its athletes – extends our deepest sympathies and thoughts to the Shriver family.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver, 1921-2009

Founder and Honorary Chairperson, Special Olympics

As founder and honorary chairperson of Special Olympics and executive vice president of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a leader in the worldwide struggle to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities for more than three decades.

In 1957, Mrs. Shriver took over the direction of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation established in 1946. The Foundation has two major objectives: to seek the prevention of intellectual disabilities by identifying its causes, and to improve the means by which society deals with citizens who have intellectual disabilities.

Under Mrs. Shriver's leadership, the Foundation has helped achieve many significant advances for people with intellectual disabilities. One of which is the establishment of Special Olympics in 1968.

Today, more than 2.25 million people in 160 countries participates in Special Olympics.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver died on Aug. 11, 2009. She was survived by her husband, Sargent Shriver, and five children

        Special Olympics is an international organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through year-round sports training and athletic competition and other related program for almost 3 million children and adults with intellectual disabilities in more than 180 countries, Special Olympics has created a model community that celebrates people’s diverse gifts. Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy and friendship. 
 
        Special Olympics is an unprecedented global movement which, through quality sports training and competition, improves the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and, in turn, the lives of everyone they touch.

        There are over 15,000 Thai Special Olympics athletes in the current programme covering almost every province in the country with various sports discipline on offer i.e. athletics, football, basketball, bocce, table tennis, tennis, badminton, swimming as well as motor skill activities for the severely handicapped. 

        There is no cost to athletes to participate in Special Olympics. Like all Special Olympics events in the rest of the world, Thailand’s activities are run mainly by volunteers. School and college students, company staff teams and family groups help in organizing the various competitions around the country. Special Olympics Thailand relies on financial support from donors and corporate sponsors to run our programme.

       The number of people with intellectual disabilities in Thailand is estimated to be close to 2 million, or about 3% of population. To date, we have been able to reach a small fraction of special people in Thailand. There is so much more that needs to be done. We welcome all form of participation from you – as parents, volunteers, or donors.
